Basile de Suresnes, The Social Fugazi
Hush Money
For this 4th release, Bazdesur records welcomes nothing less than its founder, Basile de Suresnes with the EP “Hush Money”, his really first appearance on the label. A collaborative work with the artist The Social Fugazi who was noticed a few months earlier on Frappé records. The two producers deliver a work that is surprising to say the least, as it contrasts with the universe that we knew from them. Here, no glitter or disco ball, no groovy bass line, but a sound made of machines, samples and broken rhythms. We find UK inspirations, Electronica, and a touch of house. A raw coloring totally assumed by the artists and enriched with their French “touch”. We like that. This EP reminds us of the richness and diversity of electronic music, and how good it is to mix styles! Bazdesur records promotes electronic music in the broad sense.
It's the track “Kompromat” which opens the EP. It will also be the most dancelfloor of all. From the first seconds, we plunge into a dark, raw and metallic universe. A UK rhythmic inspiration, a lively bass, and voices intertwined with synthesizers to accompany us throughout this journey.
The second track “Chulo Chulo” is a mixture of genres par excellence: we find the famous “acid” of the TB303, in a universe that differs from what we are usually hear : a broken rhythm, languorous, a suave and Latina voice, and some discreet and effective chords.
Then comes “B Side”, the most soaring of the tracks on the EP. It was built on a rhythm inspired by Drill and with almost trip-hop Portishead-style breaks. We hear a TR808, voice samples as always, and to top it all off, captivating chords which will envelop us and warm us from half of the track until its very end.
“I got the papers” adds the touch of funkiness that was missing from this opus. A subtle mix between Electro and Funk that cannot leave us indifferent. A big vintage Detroit influence that can be heard from the first notes.
To close this EP, the two producers deliver the gem “I can get xxx” and there, a return to their sources that we know so well: house music. We go back down in tempo and relax the atmosphere, like a DJ would do before the club lights come back on. Magnificent pads, a groovy bass line, an "MPC" grain, this song almost reminds us of an old Moodymann from the 90's.
